چکیده

Microplastics (MPs) pollution is arousing growing attention, yet knowledge about its occurrence in amphibians scant to date. With this study, we aimed determine whether plastic (>5000 ?m) and MPs (10–5000 could be detected adult Rana temporaria from a high-mountain ecosystem (the Cottian Alps, northwest Italy). To do this, aquatic compartments the digestive tract of R. were analyzed. Water, sediment, periphyton, macroinvertebrates, tadpoles tested negative for MPs. all frogs (n = 5); identified items (one per specimen) fibers (size range: 550.91–2355.51 µm). A statistically significant positive correlation between particle length frog size was recorded. The predominant fiber color blue. chemical composition polyamide (60%), polyethylene (20%), terephthalate (20%). Since both biotic abiotic freshwater (tadpoles included) revealed absence MPs, it can assumed that ingest surrounding terrestrial environment.

Characterization of pancreatic endocrine cells of the European common frog Rana temporaria.

To characterize the endocrine cell types of the pancreas of Rana temporaria, conventional staining, silver impregnation, and immunocytochemical methods for light and electron microscopy have been applied to paraffin, thin and semithin sections, many of them serial pairs. Quantitative data on the frequency and distribution (insular, extrainsular among the exocrine cells, or within the pancreatic...

Strategies of hypoxia and anoxia tolerance in cardiomyocytes from the overwintering common frog, Rana temporaria.

Using ventricular cardiomyocytes of the common frog, Rana temporaria, we investigated the metabolic strategies employed by the heart to tolerate 4 mo of hypoxic submergence (overwintering) as well as acute bouts of anoxia. In contrast to what is observed for the whole animal, there was no change in oxygen consumption in cardiomyocytes isolated from normoxic frogs compared with those isolated fr...

Amphibian population genetics in agricultural landscapes: does viniculture drive the population structuring of the European common frog (Rana temporaria)?

Amphibian populations have been declining globally over the past decades. The intensification of agriculture, habitat loss, fragmentation of populations and toxic substances in the environment are considered as driving factors for this decline. Today, about 50% of the area of Germany is used for agriculture and is inhabited by a diverse variety of 20 amphibian species. Of these, 19 are exhibiti...

The influence of water and light upon the pigmentary system in the common frog Rana temporaria.

Many factors, both internal and external, influence the chromatic changes of coldblooded vertebrates, and of these, three external variables are recognized as significant—light, heat and moisture. The frog can change its colour, from brown or black through intermediate tints to pale lemon, by changing the contraction and expansion of three types of chromatophores—the epidermal and dermal melano...

Discordant patterns of nuclear and mitochondrial introgression in Iberian populations of the European common frog (Rana temporaria).

Amphibians often show complex histories of intraspecific and interspecific genetic introgression, which might differ in mitochondrial and nuclear genes. In our study of the genetic differentiation of the European common frog, Rana temporaria (159 specimens from 23 populations were analyzed for 24 presumptive allozyme loci; 82 specimens were sequenced for a 540-bp fragment of the mitochondrial 1...
